Scabies Home Remedy

Learn About Scabies Home Treatment

A scabies home remedy is available that is not harsh on the skin and that will relieve the itching and numb the pain.

Scabies Causes

First you need to understand what causes scabies. Scabies are caused by a tiny mite that burrows under the skin and lays its eggs. The mite, Sarcoptes scabiei, is so small it is barely visible with the naked eye. All this activity plus the feces, the eggs, and dead mites left under the skin causes severe skin irritation and horrible itching.

How Do You Get Scabies?

The scabies mite can live 2 to 14 days away from a human host. That means it can be in clothing, toys, carpets, bedding, bath linen, and upholstry for days waiting for a human host to come along to attach itself to. Children easily transfer mites to others because they are constantly touching each other. Scabies symptoms often do not appear for up to two months after infestation. During this time scabies can be transferred to other people.

What Does Scabies Look Like?

Scabies looks like a skin rash with small red bumps or blisters. These usually occur between the fingers, on the knees, wrists, feet, around the waist, the genital area, or around the nipples. Even though the rash may cover a fairly large area, the number of mites present is usually small. The burrows the mites make can be seen but not easily. They form an "S" shaped grey, brown, or red line. The infected area is extremely itchy and may be worse at night after going to bed.

What is a Good Scabies Home Treatment

The best scabies home remedy comes from the Neem Tree which grows in India. It is also called Margosa. It is available as an oil and as dried leaves. Neem Oil is pressed from the seeds of the tree and is used as an insect repellent and as a pesticide. It is often found in skin care products, shampoo, soap, and toothpaste.

How Do You Use Neem as a Scabies Home Remedy?

You can purchase Neem products at health stores and drug stores that are made with Neem Oil and/or the leaves from the tree. Both the oil and the leaves are good for scabies treatment. Buy a soap with as high a percentage of neem oil as you can find. The same goes for lotions. Some cosmetic lotions only have a small amount of neem. You can also buy neem salves and ointments.

If your scabies rash is only in one or two small areas, you can just use a neem lotion, salve, or ointment. Cover the area several times a day. It will sooth the itch, soften the skin, and relieve the pain.

If you have a scabies rash in many areas of your body, you will need to do a bath treatment. Use neem leaf extract or neem leaf tincture in the bath water. It will take several spoonfuls. Soak in the bath for 20 minutes then wash yourself with neem soap and rinse. After drying yourself, cover your body with neem lotion.

Continue using your scabies home remedy for 10 days after rash has disappeared.

Do not use Neem products if you are trying to get pregnant, are pregnant, or are allergic to aspirin. Do not use Neem products on children.

Scabies Home Treatment

As with many infestations of mites, the home also needs treatment. As mentioned above the scabies skin mites can live quite a long time without a human host. It may take a cleaning frenzy to get rid of the mites from your home.

  • vacuum all floors daily
  • wash all clothing, dry in dryer, and iron
  • wash all bedding, dry in dryer, and iron
  • Wash all bathroom linens, dry in dryer, and iron
  • Vacuum upholstered furniture daily
  • Clean all hard furniture
  • Scrub bathroom from top to bottom
  • Clean hair combs and brushes with soap and very hot water
  • Put soft children's toys in sealed plastic bags for two weeks
  • Scrub hard toys and dry with hair dryer set on high heat

This may seem like overkill but unless you want a reinfestation, it needs to be done. All clothes worn during an infestation need to be washed before wearing again. Don't forget the car. Vacuum it out as well including the upholstery. Dispose of the vacuum cleaner contents immediately in an outside bin.
