Saw Palmetto for Acne

Saw Palmetto for acne appears to be an effective treatment for some women.

Saw Palmetto for Acne Saw Palmetto is used to treat polycystic ovarian syndrome or PCOS. Women who have PCOS usually also have acne especially around the jaw line. Women who have PCOS have an extraordinary amount of testosterone and may exhibit facial hair. Excessive testosterone results in excessive DHT which is what causes their acne.

Saw Palmetto or serenoa repens is a small fan palm that grows in the southeastern United States.

Saw Palmetto has been extensively studied for urinary tract infection treatment and for the treatment of enlarged prostrate in men. It has, however, not been studied for the treatment of acne. Nevertheless, women who have used Saw Palmetto for other conditions, have found that their acne disappeared.

Taking Saw Palmetto to get rid of acne will not work for women unless their acne is actually caused by too much testosterone and thus too much production of DHT.

Saw Palmetto is available as an extract, in tablet form, and as a tea. Follow dosage instructions on the package. You may have to experiment a little for how much it takes for you to see results. As I said before, if your acne is not caused by too much DHT, you will not see any results at all.

Saw Palmetto should not be used by women who are pregnant or who are nursing and wish to become pregnant. It can cause diarrhea and use should be discontinued if this occurs.
