Health Benefits of Sage Tea

Sage tea is an old home remedy that has been used for centuries. Modern studies support its use for several common ailments.

Sage Home Remedies Common Sage is usually found in the kitchen garden where it is grown for both culinary and medicinal uses. It is native to the northern Mediterranean countries. The sage leaves are harvested in the spring before the plant blooms and they are then dried for later use. It has antibiotic, antihydortic, astringent, antifungal, antispasmodic, and antiviral properties.

Make a tea with sage by covering some leaves with very hot water and letting it steep for a few minutes until it is the desired strength. Some people like to add honey and lemon juice but it is quite plesant to drink by itself. It can be used for:

  • preventing hot flashes and night sweats during menopause.
  • a mouth wash to relieve inflammed or bleeding gums
  • a gargle to relieve sore throat
  • a remedy for upset stomach or indigestion
  • relief of a tension headache


If you don't want all the bother of steeping sage leaves, you can use a few drops of Sage Leaf Liquid Extract in a cup of hot water for tea or even in a glass of cold water.

Clary Sage Essential Oil

Clary sage oil or essential oil is made from a different plant - Salvia sclarea. It is calming to the nervous system when used as an aromatic. A few drops in a vaporizer will help insomnia. Used as a massage oil, it will aid symptoms of PMS, muscles pains, and depression. Clary sage essential oil is often incorporated into creams and can be used to treat acne, prevent body odor, and ease joint pain and sore muscles. It should not be used by pregnant women.
