Jock itch is a fungal infection caused by trichophyton rubrum. It is not just limited to the groin area but can also appear in other areas of the body such as between the toes. It is important to begin treatment as soon as the rash appears because it can spread to even the buttocks.
Fungus infections require moist, dark, and warm places to thrive and the groin area is perfect especially if tight fitting undergarments are worn. To prevent jock itch, bath after heavy exercise and dry the groin area completely. You can use a hair dryer on a low setting to make sure the groin area is as dry as possible. Jock itch is contageous. Do not share clothing or towels.
