Over-the-counter acne remedies are often very harsh on the skin. Methods of exfoliating the dead skin cells that, combined with the natural oils of the skin, plug pores often leave the skin irritated and prone to more eruptions.
Several natural ingredients provide anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and exfoliating action and are at the same time gentle on the skin. While citrus fruits such as oranges, lemons, and limes seem to make acne worse when eaten, the juice of these fruits applied to the skin actually act as an exfoliator because they contain alpha-hydroxy acids.
Honey is a natural antiseptic that inhibits the growth of some bacteria and is an anti-inflammatory.
Papaya contains papain which works great as an exfoliator.
The gel from the aloe vera plant has an antibacterial and anti-inflammatory effect.
Try these homemade remedies for acne:
A Gentle Facial Cleanse
Gel from one large aloe vera leaf
Two teaspoons of honey
One teaspoon plain yogurt
Two tablespoons lemon juice
Mix well and apply to skin. Gently massage and rinse well.
A Gentle Exfoliator
One tablespoon of honey
One slice of papaya fruit
Two tablespoons of lemon juice
Process in a blender until smooth. Gently massage into skin and rinse.
Baking Soda Mask
Just as a baking soda in the bath can help heal the sores caused by poison ivy, it can also help heal acne. Be sure to use bicarbonate of soda here not baking powder. Mix a little soda with a few drops of water until you have a liquid paste. Apply to the skin and leave until it dries. Rinse well.
Some treatments work well for some and not for others. It can depend on what kind of acne you have. Keep trying different ones until you find one that works well for you. If you have cystic acne see Natural Remedies for Cystic Acne.
