Home Remedies Chamomile Tea Difficulty going to sleep or waking up in the middle of the night and not being able to go back to sleep causes us stress, tiredness through the day, missed work, and is probably a contributing factor to accidents.

One of My Favorite Home Remedies - Insomnia

Warm a glass of milk in the microwave. You don't want it too hot - don't let it boil. Add a teaspoon of honey and a few drops of vanilla. Drink before you go to bed. Scientists are not sure what it is in the milk that causes drowsiness and cold milk does not have the same effect. The reason for adding the honey instead of sugar is, honey is a natural sedative. The vanilla just makes it taste even better.

Magnesium - Home Remedies - Insomnia

The French swear by this one. Take a magnesium tablet with your lunch. The reason for this is that magnesium can act as an energizer for some people if taken before bedtime. It is effective for sleep if taken early in the day.

Along with this is the home remedy for insomnia of taking a bath before bedtime with epsom salts added to the water. Epsom salts are magnesium. Soaking for 15 to 20 minutes in an epsom salt bath will allow the magnesium to be absorbed through the skin. Also it can relieve joint pain caused by arthritis which can keep you awake.

The magnesium content of dandelions makes them a good treatment for insomnia. Just make a tea with a few dandelion leaves by steeping them in hot water for a few minutes. For more about the amazing dandelion read the health benefits of dandelion.

Melatonin - A Popular Home Remedy for Insomnia

Another of my favorite home remedies insomnia. I used it for years and it was wonderful until it stopped working for some reason. I went to sleep fast and woke up refreshed. Not all melatonin is made the same and it is not regulated by the FDA. You just don't know what is in the tablets. My suggestion is to try a brand and take 1 to 3 milligrams. If it works for you, great. If it doesn't, try another brand. I used to buy mine at Safeway. Now that I live in England, I have to order it online and I am wondering if I just have not found a good brand yet

Chamomile is one of the old home remedies for insomnia. It has antihistamine properties which may be the reason it acts as a sedative. Drink a cup of chamomile tea before you go to bed. Add a teaspoon of honey for good measure.

These are the most common home remedies for insomnia that have proven themselves over the years. In addition, especially if your insomnia is chronic, try going to bed at the same time every night and get up at the same time every morning - even on weekends. This helps set your body clock. If you are awakened in the night by noise coming from outside, try a white noise machine to block out those sounds.

Using a computer for any length of time before going to bed is thought to contribute to sleeplessness, especially playing computer games. If you are having a problem with insomnia, try staying off your computer for at least the last two and a half hours before going to bed.
