Dry hair is so difficult to manage. It just doesn't do what you want and it looks and feels like straw. To solve the dry hair problem you may have to change some of the things you are now doing. Things that will dry out hair are:

  • Frequent shampooing
  • Permanents
  • Hair dye
  • Dieting
  • Poor nutrition
  • Hot rollers
  • Hot curlers or straighteners
  • Blow drying
  • Too much sun
  • Washing in hard water

Some medications will cause dry hair and a long-term illness can also be the cause. The solution is to change what you can and choose from the home remedies for dry hair listed below to improve your hair's condition. If you have extremely dry hair, you may have to do several of them.

If you wash your hair every day, try washing it every other day or every two days. This gives the natural oil that you do have a chance to distribute through your hair. Also use an acidic shampoo that has a pH between 4.5 and 6.7. Believe it or not, baby shampoo is not one of these.

See if you can find an attactive hair style that doesn't require applying too much heat to your hair and even better, one that doesn't need a permanent. If you must color your hair, have it done in a salon. All hair dyes are not equal even in the shops. Some salons cut corners on costs by using dyes that are not all that great for your hair.

Avocado. Put half an avocado in a blender with a little extra virgin olive oil. Blend it until it is smooth with no lumps. Massage this into your hair, leave it for 15 minutes, and rinse. (Some people add banana to this mixture.) Both the avocado and the olive oil are good for your hair. You can use either one by itself but adding the olive oil to the avocado in the blender makes the avocado smoother. Rinsing lumps of avocado out of long hair is not easy.

Mayonnaise. You can do a hot oil treatment with mayonnaise. Just warm it up in the microwave and apply it to your hair and scalp. Massage it into your scalp to improve circulation and stimulate natural oils. You have to use real mayonnaise for this - not light or low-fat mayo. Leave it on for at least 15 minutes and then shampoo.

Coconut Oil. Another good hot oil treatment is coconut oil. Coconut oil solidifies at cold temperatures but it is a liquid at normal room temperature. Warm a small amount in the top of a double boiler and apply to the hair. Massage it into the scalp. Leave it on for half an hour and then shampoo.

Give Your Dry Hair Some Shine

You can make your hair shiny by using a vinegar rinse after you shampoo. Add half a cup of apple cider vinegar with two cups of warm water. Leave it on for a few minutes and then rinse.

Some say beer will add a shine to your hair the same way vinegar does. Just rinse with beer. They say the beer smell goes away in a short time. I wouldn't try this in the morning before work though.

Home Remedies for Dry Hair - Nutrition

A lack of essential fatty acids in our diet can cause dry hair. Fatty acids are the good fats and our body needs them for optimum health. The two fatty acids that we need in our diet are Omega-3 and Omega-6. A third fatty acid, Omega-9, can be produced by our bodies.

If you have dry hair, try taking an Omega-3 and an Omega-6 supplement to see if it makes a difference for you. If you are taking medication, discuss taking these supplements with your health care professional.

Foods that are rich in Omega-3 and Omega-6 are:

  • fish and shellfish
  • flaxseed or linseed
  • canola oil
  • pumpkin seeds
  • sunflower seeds
  • green, leafy vegetables
  • walnuts

Green leafy vegetables include lettuce, spinach, dandelion leaves, cabbage, beet greens, and kale. Dark green lettuce leaves are better for you than iceberg lettuce.
