Herbs that lower blood pressure can be used for mild high blood pressure with success. When medication alone does not lower very high blood pressure enough, herbs for hypertension are an important additional source of relief.

You can use many of these herbs to lower blood pressure in cooking. Ginger is often used in Chinese dishes. Tumeric is an ingredient in curry powder and garlic is used a lot in Italian cooking.


Olive Leaf

A study in Germany has shown a 10% lowering of mild high blood pressure for those taking 500mg of olive leaf extract twice a day. Olive leaf extract is available in capsules and as a tea.


Ginger Root

Tumeric

Tumeric is what makes curry and mustard so yellow. It is the curcumin in tumeric that lowers blood pressure. Now, unless you want to eat curry and lots of mustard every day, it is best to take it in capsule form. Take a 400mg capsule three times a day.

Do not take tumeric if you are taking blood thinners. Also, some people are allergic to tumeric so if an itchy rash develops, stop taking it.

Hawthorn Berry

Hawthorn Berry has been used by doctors to treat circulatory and respiratory ailments for centuries. It is available in both capsule and tincture form. Take a 450mg capsule or 15 drops of tincture in water twice a day with food.

Hawthorn Berry should not be taken by people who are on the heart medication Digoxin. It also counteracts the effects of medications containing phenylephrine such as nasal decongestants.


Garlic

Garlic has long been known as good for what ails you and this also goes for high blood pressure. It is not known if garlic supplements can lower blood pressure enough to be used instead of medication for some people but it certainly can be used in conjunction with medication by including it in the diet. For people who do not like the taste of garlic or who are worried about smelling like garlic, odorless garlic supplements are an alternative.

Garlic supplements can thin the blood. Do not take garlic supplements if you are also taking blood thinner medication.


Dandelion

The common dandelion is very high in potassium and has been shown to be one of the best herbs that lower blood pressure. Both the root and the leaves can be used to make a tea. Simmer cut up pieces of root for 20 minutes and strain into a cup. You can also steep the leaves for 10 minutes in very hot water. These high blood pressure herbs may work better for some people than others and they may take more time to work for some people. When trying an herb for high blood pressure, give it some time to have an effect and monitor your blood pressure regularly.
