Many herbs for sciatica will give relief from the pain of this condition. A sciatica home remedy made from herbs can reduce inflammation and muscle tension.
Symptoms of Sciatica
The symptoms of sciatica are:
low back pain
pain in the buttock
pain that runs down the leg
leg numbness
muscular weakness
pins and needles feeling in the leg
Some or all of these symptoms may be present. Some people may only experience symptoms when standing or walking. Others may also have pain while sitting.
Sciatica Causes
The cause of sciatica pain is the compression or simply irritation of the sciatic nerve or of nerves leading to the sciatic nerve. This can happen because of a herniated disc, a narrowing of the spinal canal through bone spurs, dislocation, or inflammation. A small percentage of the population has a sciatic nerve which runs through the Piriformis Muscle rather than underneath it. This muscle can compress the sciatic nerve. Pregnant women often have sciatica caused by the uterus pressing on the sciatic nerve or from changes in posture as the fetus grows. Sciatica can also be caused by anything that forces misalignment of the sacral vertebrae over long time periods.
Relief With Herbs for Sciatica
Some herbs relieve sciatica pain because they are anti-inflammatory. When you reduce the inflammation, you reduce the pressure on the nerve.
Herbs that are anti-inflammatory are:
Evening Primrose
St. John's Wort
Saw Palmetto
Grape Seed Extract
Willow Bark
Massaging the lower back with herbal infused oil can help alleviate muscle tension. Oil of St. John's Wort diluted in a carrier oil such as olive oil will sooth and relax.
A tincture made of Chamomile rubbed on the lower back is also helpful. Drinking Chamomile Tea is a great muscle relaxer. Drink a cup three to four times a day.
You can make a pain relieving oil using cayenne pepper to rub on the back. To make the infusion mix one tablespoon of cayenne pepper with a half cup of olive oil in the top of a double boiler and cover with a lid. Simmer the water in the bottom of the double boiler for one hour on low heat. Add more water if necessary.
Oil of Wintergreen massaged into the lower back is very soothing. Wintergreen is not for internal consumption and must be kept out of the reach of children.
While herbs can help with the suffering of sciatic pain, many people find they get more permanent relief through exercises. You need a professional examination though to make sure you do the right exercises for your specific case. My husband and I both have sciatica but for different reasons and causes. Therefore, the exercises assigned to each of us are different. If we neglect doing our exercises, wham, we have an attack. We use our herbs for relief and immediately get back on our respective exercise program.
