Gout Natural Remedies

What Causes Gout and What You Can Do About It?

Gout natural remedies are often effective in relieving gout attacks and preventing them from occurring in the future. Studies on cherries and gout have shown that they significantly reduce urate in the blood which is a precurser of uric acid crystals. Gout is an extremely painful form of arthritis.

Home Remedies Cherries Gout was known in medieval times to be the disease of kings. Kings and rich men often had a much richer diet than the peasantry. They ate more of the foods containing high levels of purine. In addition they also consummed high levels of alcohol.

Today we know that gout can strike people in all levels of society and it is not only caused by diet but can also be caused by renal failure. Gout tends to run in families.

Gout is caused by uric acid crystals accumulating in the joints - commonly the big toe. It may however, occur in other joints in the body.

Gout can be caused by medication, dieting, or a potassium deficiency.

Gout and Diet

Anyone suffering from gout needs to avoid foods high in purine. Those foods are:

  • game meats
  • meat extracts
  • sweetbreads
  • liver
  • kidney
  • anchovies
  • scallops
  • sardines
  • brains
  • herring
  • mackerel

Other foods with a moderate amount of purine are:

  • mushrooms
  • beef
  • pork
  • poultry
  • fish
  • peas
  • beans
  • asparagus
  • spinach
  • cauliflower
  • oatmeal
  • wheat bran

It is best to avoid any foods containing corn syrup. If you read food labels, you will be amazed how many of our modern grocery store foods contain corn syrup or fructose. You will find it even in foods that are not normally thought to be sweet. Corn syrup is a major ingredient of carbonated beverages. It is present in most commercially prepared sweets and desserts.

Cherries and Gout

A study carried out by ARS Western Human Nutrition Research Center in Davis, California showed that eating 45 fresh Bing Cherries for breakfast reduced the levels of urate in blood plasma of participants.

It may be that you don't have to eat that many cherries. Dr. Ludwig W. Blau of Prevention Magazine claimed that he cured his own gout by eating six to eight cherries a day. Even so, if you think you feel a bout coming on, eat a whole bowl full in the beginning.

You do not have to eat any special cherry or just fresh cherries. All kinds of cherries work whether sweet or tart. You can eat them canned, frozen , or dried. Some people drink cherry juice instead.

Apple Cider Vinegar for Gout

Many people believe one of the best gout natural remedies is apple cider vinegar. It is important that you use only vinegar that actually contains "the mother" and you will probably have to go to a health food store to get it. Mix a couple of teaspoons of vinegar with a glass of water and drink it three times a day. Some people mix the vinegar with an equal amount of honey but this is not necessary. Do not try to drink the vinegar straight because it can irritate the throat.

People have also had success by rubbing apple cider vinegar on the affected joint.

Once you get over your gout attack, continue drinking the vinegar at least once or twice a day to prevent another attack.

Potassium - A Gout Natural Remedy

Gout sufferers may have low levels of potassium. Potassium raises the pH levels of the body and makes the uric acid more soluble. Include potassium rich foods in your diet. These foods are:

  • oranges
  • tomatoes
  • potatoes
  • avocado
  • cucumber
  • green pepper
  • brussel sprouts
  • broccoli
  • squash
  • egglant
  • strawberries
  • bananas
  • cabbage
  • cauliflower
  • apricots

There are potassium supplements available but it is better to get this mineral salt from fresh food.

Dandelion is classed as a food and an herb and is very high in potassium. Make a tea with the dandelion leaves or the root or both. Simmer the cut up pieces of dandelion root in water for 20 minutes. Then add some young leaves and let them steep for a few minutes. Strain and drink. Have a cup in the morning and again in the evening. Read about the amazing health benefits of dandelion.
