Get Relief From Constipation By Changing Your Diet
Eating a diet of too many of the foods that cause constipation is often the main reason people suffer from this condition. Relief from constipation is often achieved by simply reducing the quantity of these foods in the diet.
One of the main culprits is dairy products such as milk, yogurt, ice cream, and cheese. Then add in chips, foods made with refined white flour, white rice, instant mashed potatoes and large portions of meat and you have a recipe for constipation for many people.
It's not that you shouldn't eat these foods. These foods are alright in moderation. These foods need to be coupled with foods that are high in fiber - foods that prevent constipation and foods that give relief for constipation.
Avoid eating too many foods that have been pre-chewed. What in the world do I mean by pre-chewed. I am talking about foods like mashed potatoes, pured carrots, and pured peas. You don't have to chew them before you swallow them do you? If you do eat mashed potatoes, eat the home-made kind. Instant mashed potatoes are one of the worst foods on the list of foods that cause constipation. Along with this is a certain kind of "potatoe chip" that is made from mashed potatoes. You buy them in tubes. The "chips" have been pressed into a mold. They are all exactly the same size and shape and yes, they taste good.
Large amounts of meat in the diet can cause constipation. People who go on a low-carb diet often suffer from constipation in the early days of the diet. It is temporary and passes when the portions of meat are reduced and portions of high fiber vegetables are increased. This has been my experience. It is a fallacy that low-carb diets restrict fruits and vegetables. Some fruits and vegetables are not allowed but the main source of carbohydrates are supposed to come from vegetables and fruit.
List of Foods That Cause Constipation
cheese
white rice
white flour
ice cream
milk
chips
canned fruit juice
large amount of meat
eggs
I would also add fruit "flavored" yogurt to this list - yogurt that doesn't have any whole fruit in it.
As you can see, these constipation foods are all low in fiber or completely lacking in fiber. Improving your diet by eliminating or cutting down on these foods and replacing them with foods that are higher in fiber may be all you need to do to eliminate constipation. Also increase your fluid intake. Drink more water and/or drink herbal tea.
