Taking fish oil for weight loss does work under certain circumstances according to an Australian study.
In the study 75 obese people were given the same amount of oil. Half of them were given tuna fish oil and the other half were given sunflower oil. Then half of each group were told to exercise for 45 minutes three times a week. The other half of each group were told not to do any extra exercise. All participants were told not to change their diet in any way.
After three weeks each group was weighed. The group which took fish oil showed an average weight loss of 4.5 pounds. Participants in the three other groups showed little change.
These results are encouraging for people who want to lose weight. It is possible that an even larger weight loss would occur when taking fish oil and following a weight loss diet.
Note that taking fish oil for weight loss only works when combined with exercise. Participants in the Australian study exercised for 45 minutes a session keeping their heart rate at 75% of their maximum heart rate and they did this at least three times a week.
Fish oil is readily available in supplements. The participants in this study took six grams of fish oil per day in capsule form. They took a total of eight capsules divided into three doses throughout the day. The dosage can be decreased on days when fatty fish such as salmon or tuna is included in the diet.
The reasons for weight loss with fish oil are not clear and more research needs to be done.
