Ear Wax Removal Home Remedies

How to Remove Ear Wax

Ear wax removal home remedies are helpful when the ears become plugged with wax and interfere with hearing. However, ear wax cleaning can be dangerous.

The ears are self cleansing and are ordinarily not a problem. When hearing is affected by the build up of ear wax, most people want to do something about it.

How to Remove Ear Wax Safely

Ear wax can be softened and dissolved by putting a few drops of mineral oil, olive oil, or baby oil into the ear. Warm the oil in its bottle by holding the bottle under hot water from the tap just like you would for a baby bottle. You want the oil to be just above body temperature.

Putting the drops in your ear is easiest when done by another person. Lie on your side and drop a few drops into the ear. Stay down for five or ten minutes. Then turn your head so the ear with the oil in it can drain onto a towel. Do this routine for three days. The ear wax will soften and may be completely gone. You can now put a few drops of warm water into the ear and let it drain on a towel.

Dangerous methods of removing ear wax are:

  • Using cotton swabs or Q-tips to try to get the wax out. You just push it in deeper.

  • Using any kind of instrument to dig at the ear. You can damage your eardrum and cause infection.

  • Using hydrogen peroxide to dissolve the wax. Again you can damage your eardrum and cause irritation.

  • If you have a perforated ear drum, see an Ear, Nose, and Throat Specialist.

If ear wax is a continual problem for you, you can put a few drops of baby oil or mineral oil in the ears a couple of times a week to keep the wax soft and prevent it from compacting and building up.

As always, if these ear wax removal home remedies do not work for you, see your physician.
