Dandruff Treatments and Natural Remedies

Dandruff home remedies can help you get rid of those embarassing white flakes that show up on your shoulders. Natural dandruff remedies are safe and save you money.

Home Remedies Thyme What are the causes of dandruff? Your scalp naturally sheds skin cells all of the time just like the skin on the rest of your body. It becomes a problem when a fungus called malassezia gets out of control on your scalp. This fungus causes the scalp to shed cells at a much faster rate than normal. The skin cells clump together and show up as flakes on your shoulders.

Here are several dandruff home remedies:

  • For mild dandruff simply wash your hair every day. This will usually keep a mild case under control.

  • An excellent home remedy for dandruff is coconut oil. Apply the oil to the scalp and then brush the scalp with a natural bristle brush.

  • Make a tea with two cups of hot water and four tablespoons of thyme. Let it steep for 10 to 15 minutes. Let it cool and strain it. Wash your hair as usual and pour the tea over your scalp and then massage your scalp. Do not rinse. Repeat the next day.

  • Apply warmed olive oil to the scalp when the hair is wet. Part your hair and dab with an olive oil soaked cotton ball. Then part your hair in another place and dab that part until you have covered your whole head. Leave the oil on your scalp for half an hour and then shampoo.

  • Apply a few drops of tea tree oil which is a natural anti-fungal to your scalp half an hour before shampooing.

  • Rinse your hair and scalp with half apple cider vinegar and half water. Do not rinse. Just let it dry. You can do this at night before bed and wash your hair in the morning. Read more about the Health Benefits of Apple Cider Vinegar.

Put a few drops of Oil of Oregano in your regular shampoo. Oregano Oil has antifungal properties. Learn more about Oregano Oil Health Benefits.

In addition to these natural dandruff remedies, you may also want to use one of the many anti-dandruff shampoos on the market. I would try these home remedies first because the shampoos can be harsh on the hair. Dandruff shampoos that contain tar can discolor light colored hair.
