Cinnamon and Weight Loss

Cinnamon and weight loss is a hot topic today. Studies show that adding more cinnamon to the diet aids weight loss in addition to other health benefits.

So, just how does this work? It all comes down to how the body metabolizes carbohydrates. When we eat bread, rice, pasta, and potatoes which are all high in carbohydrates the body converts them into glucose or sugar. This sugar is used for energy but any excess is stored as fat to be used later. Cinnamon speeds up the body's metabolism to burn all of the glucose so less is stored as body fat.

The nice thing about cinnamon and weight loss is that it doesn't take much cinnamon to do the trick. Most people like cinnamon and enjoy adding cinnamon powder to foods like cereal, tea, hot chocolate, fruit, and even coffee.

A very popular diet is called the cinnamon and honey diet. In this diet you mix one part cinnamon to two parts honey and add enough hot water to make one cup. Then you drink one half cup before breakfast and one half cup just before going to bed. Most of the honey and cinnamon diets I have read say that you have to use organic honey.

Does this diet work? Some people claim that it does. Some people claim that the pounds rolled off. Most of them do not indicate whether they were also on a low calorie diet or a low carbohydrated diet or any diet to lose weight at all.

Just what are the benefits of honey and cinnamon together to lose weight? I have searched and searched to find the origin of this diet and any scientific basis for it but I have not succeeded in finding anything. The facts are that cinnamon does boost metabolism of carbohydrates. Honey in considered to be healthy but it is mostly fructose and glucose and its glycemic index can be anywhere from 31 to 78 depending on where the little bees gathered their pollen. The glycemic index is more likely to be on the lower end if the honey has been blended from several different sources and it is unlikely it will be organic. If you use the glycemic index to choose your diet foods, you know that a food with a score of 31 is one that you can eat without worry. However, a food that has a glycemic score of 78 is one that you could eat only occassionally.

If you want to try the honey and cinnamon diet, go ahead and see if it helps you. I honestly believe that you could have the same and maybe even better results by just adding more cinnamon to your every day diet. Studies have shown that it doesn't take very much cinnamon to have an effect - 1/4 teaspoon a day should be enough.
