The many benefits of goldenseal makes it one of the "cure all" herbs. Unfortunately, it does have some serious side effects for some people and cannot be used by everyone or used in long-term situations.
Goldenseal root is an old America Indian remedy. It grows in damp forests and meadows in North America but over harvesting has affected the availability of the wild plants. It is the root of the plant that is used for medicinal purposes. The plant contains healing alkaloids including berberine, canadine, berberastine, and hydrastine. It is antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, anti-fungal, and antiparasitic.
