Artichoke Extract and Artichoke Leaf
Cynara scolymus
Artichoke extract, made from the leaf of the artichoke plant, has been tested in studies for its effectiveness in reducing symptoms of gastritis, cholesterol, irritable bowel syndrome, and heartburn.
It is the leaf of the plant that is used in herbal remedies. The leafs are dried and then powdered before placing in capsules. The dried leaves can be used to make a tea. Artichoke extract is also made from the leaves. It is the cynarine in the leaves that is believed to be helpful for certain ailments.
Studies have shown artichoke extract to be effective in these ailments:
- Relieving heartburn. The studies were done on people who suffered from heartburn and were otherwise healthy. A significant portion of those taking either 320 mg or 640 mg a day reported improvement after eight weeks.
- Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS). More studies need to be done but preliminary evidence shows that artichoke leaf extract is effective in relieving symptoms of IBS. The study that was done was actually researching the effectiveness of artichoke leaf in aiding dyspepsia but it was found that many of the participants also suffered from IBS. It was found that symptoms lessened for both conditions in a significant number of participants.
- High Cholesterol. Studies have shown that artichoke leaf reduces cholesterol level but not by very much. It is probably most effective for those who only have a slightly raised cholesterol and for those who wish to maintain a healthy cholesterol level.
- Gastritis - Upset Stomach. Artichoke leaf extract stimulates the gall bladder to produce more bile which in turn reduces stomach upset by reducing excessive stomach acids and fats. This reduces bloating and gas which causes belching. A popular Italian aperitif called Cynar contains artichoke leaf as one of its main ingredients and is known for settling the stomach. I strongly suspect but cannot prove that Compari, another Italian aperitif, also contains artichoke. I cannot prove it because the ingredients are kept secret. However, I have known for years that a few sips of Compari will settle an upset stomach.
Artichoke leaf extract is thought to be safe but its effect on pregnant women, nursing mothers, and young children is not known. If you have gallstones, you should not take artichoke leaf. As with all herbal remedies, check with your physician before use if you are taking any prescribed medications.
